Generally, when you modify files on the branch directly (bypassing
aufs), you should specify "udba=notify" aufs mount option. Refer to the
aufs manual in detail.

And more importantly, the aufs module in debian is totally broken. Last
time I saw aufs in debian, they use TOO OLD version which is obsoleted
and not maintained. Additionally they made their original changes. It
means I cannot support aufs in debian.

I'd suggest you to stop using aufs in debian, and get latest version of
aufs after reading http://aufs.sf.net.
