The "opaque" is an aufs specific internal attribute for a directory.
When it is set to 2, then aufs stops looking-up at the branch index
2. In other words, aufs hides the files under the directory on the
branch 3 and lowers.

Basically yes.
The "whiteout" is created per a filename and hides the same named files
on lower branches.
