Interesting. I don't know why your system has an older header file.
Anyway we could confirm the version.

Let me make sure,
5. mount -t aufs -o br:branch:ro none u
6. umount u --> ESTALE
right?

On my test system, it works expectedly.
Did you run another command between 5 and 6?
