I'd suggest you to print kernel logs on your console for testing.
For example,
- setup /etc/rsyslogd.conf or something add a line "kern.* /dev/console"
- echo 8 > /proc/sys/kernel/printk

As far as I know, tmpfs doesn't take such strange behaviou.
