Indeed. Armed with this diagnosis, I've found that lack of async io support is a known issue ([2]https://github.com/zfsonlinux/zfs/issues/223), and is appatently unassigned and targetting milestone 0.8.0, so this looks pretty hopeless for me. I appreciate it if you have any ideas :) otherwise, perhaps I will try non-nfs network file systems.
