Maybe you are right again.
Digging down GIT commit history, I see these commits.

5862dff 2012-11-09 aufs: for linux-3.7, support for uapi, backward compatibility
f2f43e8 2012-11-09 aufs: for linux-3.7, support for uapi

By these commits, include/linux/aufs_type.h became less meaningful. But
it may be better to keep it for for backward compatibility.
Now I ask myself "How long do I keep this meaningless file?" and your
bug report leads me to the answer that it is aufs3.8 (just after
aufs3.7)!

So I will do these works.
- fix the document in aufs3.7.
- for aufs3.8 and later, remove include/linux/aufs_type.h and fix the
  document.

Now aufs_type.h exists under include/uapi/linux only (until "make
headers_install").
