If "written to the rw layer" means "by-passing aufs", then it is an
expected behaviour.
I'd suggest you to read "man aufs", espcially ".SH User's Direct Branch
Access (UDBA)"

I guess it was due to the exhausted memory.
Can you see several out of memory messages around the aufs VDIR msg?
