Exactly. You are totally right, and I am happy and surprised that you
tracked the history of aufs.

The "aufs as readonly no-whiteout branch of another aufs" feature,
aka. "robr" mount option, was implemented in aufs1 era, but was dropped
in aufs2. It simply because it is (mostly?) enough to put multiple
branches in a single aufs mount.

I left a note in the document
"Documentation/filesystems/aufs/design/99plan.txt"  (previously
08plan.txt) because I thought someday someone would want that feature
again. But through all over aufs2 era, there was no such request (if I
remember correctly). I think I am going to shout loudly "Add more
branches in single aufs mount, instead of nested stacking."
Such nested stacking will consume the kernel stack very much.
