It means something unmatched in dcache (or icache) is detected. That is only I can say about ESTALE. As you might know, the word NFS is in userspace. Libc defines a message string for ESTALE. ESTALE may happen in aufs or VFS. Generally it indicates that the target dentry should be re-lookup-ed. I am not sure either ESTALE was returned by re-lookup or not in your case. If I remember correctly, such old VFS returns ESTALE in some cases and was fixed much later. I don't know your ESTALE came from whether VFS or aufs. J. R.
