OK, it's now two weeks since I contacted the maintainer and he didn't
answer. Could someone make me the maintainer or just orphan it?

Well, if the current maintainer is not responding for 2 weeks, I guess
that you could become its maintainer if you'll ask.
P.S. Please always include direct link to the package in question, so we
are not 'hunting' it next time [1].
