This is good point raised by Tom. Regarding the changed pkgsums; yes they would 
change, but if it is your first time interacting with the package you are 
unlikely to notice that.

In my opinion, the AUR UI (and AUR helpers) should warn of sources that should 
be punycoded but are not, I don't know if any other other aspect of the 
PKGBUILDs should also emit warnings. Renovatebot will for example warn users 
about hidden Unicode characters[1]. Sadly I cannot find an example warning to 
link.
