Please try building based on that commit and see if it works (building from a fixed commit is perfectly acceptable and doesn't make this a VCS package, it is only a VCS package if it tracks the tip of a branch instead of specifying a fixed version). Given that the development of this package appears to have stalled in early 2017, I would rather get rid of the VCS package amide-hg instead of the stable one, since tracking the current development is not necessary any more.
