Hi, I would like to remain as a maintainer but it seems like the main
maintainer is not active anymore. Is there no way for us to change the
main maintainer, without me "abandoning" the package and then flagging
it as orphaned?

The only way to remove the main maintainer is by filing an orphan
request that will require at least 14 days before being accepted. You
don't have to abandon the package if you wish to continue to maintain it.
There's no other way to remove a maintainer from a package, even for PMs.
