Couldn't agree more Mike.

Dennis Stacey's massive article a couple of years ago in the rag, on the importance of a good compass and the fact that 'compass' has been added to the list of mandatory instruments in the latest MOSP 3, I thought we had been time warped to the 30's.

Anyway, sooner or later, a compass will be worthless when the geomagnetic poles reverse. We are well overdue for a swap. I also surmise that there will be a long period before when the poles haven't quite made up their mind and the magnetic field will be all over the place.

If the magnetic field collapses in that period, then being bombarded by high energy particles will make a technological life a challenge, so that having a compass that doesn't work will be the least of our concerns.
