Hi Bob

I agree, this steep downhill take off on a sealed runway would be an ideal
application for
an FES equipped glider as long as the pilot is not concerned about losing a few
L/D points
at low speed and quite a few more at cruising speed.

Over the last 20 or so years I have imported about 150 aircraft and (with the
exception of
the ASK 21 trainer) every customer has put performance right on top of the list
of priorities.
Authors claiming that the “loss of performance is not noticeable on an FES
glider" are not
just bending the truth, they are clearly misleading the gliding community.

When a comparatively tiny TE probe on the fin of a modern glider typically
causes about
0.7% of the drag at 100 KIAS imagine what damage a much thicker turbulent
airflow can
do when it is in contact with the entire length of the fuselage.

In summary, I agree that an FES glider is easier to build and possibly easier
to maintain but
it doesn’t stand a chance when it comes to matching the performance of an
identical glider
with a fully retractable engine.

Sorry, Bob - in this instance we can only agree to disagree!

Kind regards

Bernard
