Oh Tom C, I can’t believe you [?] would shoot the messenger rather than improve the message.
FAI puts most gliders over the turnpoint +/- 15 meters, in an 18+ meter glider!!! Yes I know 747’s require at least 2,000’ vertical separation for good reason. ICAO only changes the units to keep us all calculating… The rest of the world would be happily metric. As I read it, part of the Leeton F1 challenge is to go as far as possible in the time…. Implying bigger circles seems logical. I’m for AAT aspect of the Leeton F1 comp, best distance and speed within time limit under a formula [that we will all argue about] and more…. well more than 1 km turnpoint circles. Alan Wilson Canberra [and World Comps in 1976] PS I am unlikely to be at the Leeton F1 challenge…. But Leeton is a great site, on the trough line, great town, and the club needs our support if GFA wants to keep it available. Ultimate wimnner comes out of the top class, and have a consolation prize for winner of the second group. Pity to limit numbers. In my opinion GP racing is by far the most enjoyable and fun option, and fairest. I would be hopeful that ultimately the State and National comps adopt GP racing for contests, with multiple grouping of max 20 gliders. Next season there will be a new competition - we've decided to call it "Formula 1.0" as it is a Grand Prix style contest that revolves around the current Club Class handicap point of 1.0, but also includes a bracket in either direction. The following sailplanes are eligible : Jantar Standard 3 Jantar Standard 2 Jantar Standard (SZD-41A) LS1 (A,B,C,D,F) Marianne Standard Cirrus DG-100 Hornet Open Libelle ASW-15B Standard Libelle Cobra Astir CS Astir CS 77 HP-14 There are a large number of gliders in Australia of these type (over 200, some of which may still be airworthy). The event will be held at Leeton Airfield from the 28th of December, to the 5th of January. Aerotow and winch launching will be available. As there is a slight handicap difference, handicapping will be done by applying a formula to a fixed task that varies the size of the turnpoint circles based on handicap - for example, a Standard Libelle may only have to go within 3 kilometres of a turnpoint, but a Jantar Std 3 may have to go within 500 metres. As with all GP events, pending some simple verification, first across the finish line wins. The purpose is not to get the maximum distance possible from each day, but to set tasks that use the best part of the weather. The focus is on racing, and fun. As it is a grand prix style event, for safety reasons numbers are strictly limited. In quite a modest amount of time, we have had a large amount of interest.
