Thanks to all those who replied both to the list and privately. I was
feeling pretty pleased with myself and I'm afraid I let it show.
So far in my limited experience I've only flown the IS28, K13, Junior, Falke
and PW5. The PeeWee in my view is the most fun and I'm glad I have finally
managed a longish soaring flight in it instead of my usual yo-yo circuits.
After the more stately aircraft I've flown I just love its quick rate of
roll.
I've followed the controversy about the World Class and find a lot of
parallels with sailing which I've enjoyed most of my adult life. I like the
concept and I'd really love to see it more widely supported in the way that
one design yacht racing is. It's where the serious stuff happens and you
really know when you're off the pace. Yet the one design concept manages to
coexist with the more open or development classes where it's more about
innovation, design, equipment and money (as well as skill). It seems to me
that in the gliding scene there doesn't seem to be the same amount of room
for both points of view as there is in sailing.
John Orton asked about the wind on Wednesday: 5kts NE but close enough to
still. There were quite a few isolated fires burning some way off and all of
the smoke columns were vertical. I don't think it was wave, just late
afternoon thermals on a late starting day, but I don't have enough
experience yet to recognise or analyse lift in any depth. I'm just glad that
I was not spending the time perfecting my technique of centring on sink - at
which I think I'm a natural.
