Gee, it's been quiet lately....
Now this isn't strictly gliding, and it certainly isn't soaring, but if
you're into aircraft of any sort, you could do worse than browse (or
buy) the current May issue of Silicon Chip magazine at your local.
They have included a quite interesting and oftimes spooky article on the
Global Hawk pilotless aircraft currently out here in, or over Australia.
The especially fascinating part of the article is the claimed L/D of 34
for this aircraft - engine off, and the fact that in the event of engine
failure it is programmed to glide to one of several "friendly" airfields
within gliding range.
Is you local airstrip in the database? Certainly offers new challenges
for the duty pilot doesn't it. Not to mention anyone else about to join
circuit - Who gives way?
Unlikely I know, but interesting to contemplate .....
