I think it was in "experimental R& D" for testing and after that you can
put prototypes in "experimental - continuing operation of prototype" .
Don't hold me to the exact wording.
Maybe I should put a hook on the BD4. One up and with half fuel or less it
goes up quite well at 80 knots.
RV4s, 6s should be good too.
Seriously I think someone should look at making a case for a dedicated tug
being given an airworthiness certificate in "Experimental- Air racing"
under the "activities in support of air racing" clause. There is no
prohibition on factory built air racing aircraft.
The other way is to use the autotug engine in a homebuilt airframe. You are
allowed to buy the engine under the 51% rule and it doesn't have to be a
certified aircraft engine.
Alternatively I'd try to checkout the 6 cylinder Jabiru engine in the kit
Jabiru with long wings as a tug(short wings might be OK too.) I've flown
the 80 hp long wing and the 120 Hp short wing. Use the thing for ab initio
aircraft handling and circuit training when not towing and paddock
selection later.
Any regulatory problems that arise with the above are a worthy task for the
GFA to lobby to remove. Don't hold your breath.
