I'm not sure it's fair to blame the lawyers entirely. They're really just 
responding to a market situation opened up by greed, and an inability in our 
modern society to accept that sometimes things just go wrong. The thinking 
runs something like this. "It's not my fault so it must be someone else's and 
somebody ought to pay me." Sometimes it goes as far as "well, it may be my 
fault but someone should have stopped me so the blame should be transferred 
to them and then they should pay me""

 It's often referred to as the "entitlement" society, and it spreads 
throughout much of life today, not just in the law courts.
