Thought I'd give the webgroup a few words about the fantastic Junior Meet that was held on the weekend just passed at the Baccus Marsh Airfield!
The weekend started off with myself and Adam Inson egging on our mate Scotty to have a go at flying from the Benalla A/D down to the deep south! With CUes to 10,000' it seemed like it'd be an easy trip! It ended up bluing out and getting very cool on the ground unfortunately, so after one blue climb scotty landed at Mangalor A/F. Fortunately Adam Inson (Charlie) and I were about a km away from the turnoff when we got the call! Had the Hornet in the box after 20 minutes!
Scotty and I were spewing, as we should've both taken out the 2 LS-7's, filled them to the eyeballs with water and gone and done our 500's! Like a couple other pilots had done that day! Not to worry, we got to Baccus at 5:30, and were taken straight to an old pub where we had a nice meal and a few.. beers with 4 other Juniors!
On the morning of the saturday Rolf Beultler, David Wilson and Peter (XJG) gave a really good site briefing, as well as David giving a few very helpful words on interpreting the weather and charts!
Around 1330, we were called back to the clubhouse for a quick few words on what we might like to get up to today, site checks and just plane staying airborne was called for!
In the, Saturday bought a cool westerly breeze with high cirrus, looked like little soaring to be done. So Scotty and Charlie had their site checks and managed a local flight in the Janus and small cross-country in a Puch respectivly.
Later that evening, the Juniors cooked up a feast for the members at the Baccus A/F, including snags, steak, salad and of course the dessert of custard pudding and cake! Thanks Charlie, and 5 other juniors providing him with the moral support!
That night, we all stayed up talking about the things juniors talk about.. as well as singing about a thou-sand songs at the top of our lungs on tailgates of the cars!
Sunday morning, all was very well, blue skies but with a strong southerly.. Cues starting early.. Looks like a good day!
After Rowan's Dad cooking us all 4 pan-cakes each with syrip, cream and fruit salad were were keen for some action! Rolf, David and Peter calling us in for a de-brief on yesterdays conditions and flights as well as a very well presented briefing on Team Flying and the days weather.
The task for the day, considering the early finish (we had to get home in Daylight) was an out and return 95km task to the South! Scotty in the Hornet, Shannon McGowan and Charlie in the Janus, Kimberly Power and David Wilson in another Janus, Rowan and Rolf in the Puch and myself running wings.. funds very low.
The Juniors all came back with many smiles, some jumping and punching the air in excitement because of the fantastic day and conditions! I was going to go for a local flight in a Short Wing Kooka, but ran out of time. The day turned out to range from a first cross-country outing to the first race around a given task!
We packed up at 1500, and had a thorough de-brief on what the juniors thought of the conditions and task given, followed by the experts thoughts! Very well done, I think the Juniors got a sniff at what can be achieved by having a de-brief at the end of each flight with experienced pilots and even other juniors!
So a HUGE thanks must go to David, Peter and Rolf on putting on a Fantastic show over the weekend! I spoke to all the Juniors afterwards and they said they all had a ball, and took alot away from the weekend! At other Junior Meets that I go to, will definately try to organise something of the simular - maybe like a Teams Challange!
Also a very big thanks must also go to Shannon, Kim and Rowan for organising this great weekend out at the Baccus A/F! We'll definately have to do it again!
That's it from me, will keep you all up to date on the Junior movement and especially the Junior Nats to be held in Temora Nov Dec 2004!!
Best Regards Adam Woolley
