It was brought to my attention today that at least one gliding club has
received a survey form from AirServices asking if they use the Class E
above FL125 and how often. This is an attempt to reclassify all airspace
above FL 125 as Class C.

The answer should be something like "as often as meteorological conditions
allow" and a request to leave the airspace as Class E.

There aren't many others going to go to bat for gliding on this one.

Block clearances are OK for wave windows but not much good for large
triangles in thermals on really good days. Don't believe an ATC when he or
she tells you you can get a clearance - in a glider you cannot comply with
maintain xxx level so they don't have to give a clearance and likely won't
even if you have the Mode C transponder required in Class C airspace.

This is a push on non rational grounds by the ATC unions and airline
pilots(some of whom fly in Class E in the US without protest).

Like the security issue, once you start instituting procedures on non
rational grounds there is no stopping.

I wonder where certain RTO/Ops people who happen to work for ATC are on the
NAS issue. A deafening silence while their union spreads lies and
disinformation?
