A message from Alice
I would like to thank all those who sent me messages of sympathy and
support while I was in hospital following my encounter with a stubble field in
January. Those messages really helped me get over the event and to look
forward, not back.
I am pleased to be able to report that I have now had major
surgery to fix my poor broken back and ruffled tail feathers and do not feel any
ill effects following those procedures - complex as they were. Shane
McAffrey and the staff at his excellent hospital have been looking after me very
well and I am sure that my recovery will be complete.
I had hoped to be able to join the 40 or so gliders entered
in the QSA Easter Competition at Chinchilla, but Dr Shane suggested,
rather unkindly I thought, that I was already carrying a bit too much weight in
my tail and that the added weight of the repair would increase the minimum
cockpit load to the extent that it would exceed the maximum allowed!
I'm not sure that I appreciate people talking about my weight
distribution in such a clinical and impersonal manner, but the end result
is that I am now undergoing some most exciting weight reduction and
cosmetic surgery.
Dr Shane and his team are carefully removing the gel coat from my
body and tail and will then give me a nice new paint job. They assure me
that this will bring my weight distribution back to where it used to be -
well almost anyway.
I hope to be back soaring with the eagles by the end of the month.
For those who have not been able to visit me in hospital, I have asked
Brian to let you see some happy snaps of my surgery. These are at http://www.squirrel.com.au/~wade/Alice/ along
with a couple of reminders as to why I am here.
