Mike and other dead 12/12XL users.
I have not personally witnessed a 12/12XL show the same message on the
screen but the current and previous posts suggest there are at least two
ways that model can fail. My guess is that it is all related to the
internal battery going flat as many of these are 8-10 yrs old (and yes
mine showed some corrosion on the termianls also). The rest of the
circuitry and mechanics look pretty bullet proof, and 90% of all
electrical failures are lack of power. The flat lithium seems to be in
charge of holding the operating system in the internal memory, hence
very little action if it losses the program.
I am a bit sceptical about the "just put in new batteries and leave
overnight" trick as the lithium is not a rechargable type. I am sure
GME/Garmin might have been more helpful as others have found with
warranty type claims if I had set my unit to them. I did not want to
risk the cost of the shipping when I backed my ability to fix it myself.
The main problem I gather with the 12/12XL models is that they are
sealed and need to be cut apart where the GPSII+ unscrews, providing
easy ( when you have a really really small soldering iron tip) access to
the battery on the board.
If you have a dead looking one, I think it is worth the effort to try a
new internal battery and a software reload. If it is really dead then
you have wasted some effort and you might like to pass you nice new
lithium battery on to the next chap to try.

I went to turn on my early Garmin 12XL the other day and nothing
happened
even with a new set of batteries.
Is this the infamous dead internal lithium battery problem?
