Contrive some unlikely scenario, yell "safety" and then start making and
enforcing rules.
Been done lots of times historically and can be used to justify any amount
of repression.
CASA(and predecessors) and the ATC union do it all the time and they are
right now doing this re the NAS.
Generally used to justify repression where rational analysis shows the real
risk to be miniscule to non existent.
In some cases it gets real bad when the proponents aren't given a early
reality check and free men and women have to spend much blood and/or
treasure exterminating them.
The thing about freedom and liberty is that they are precious, certainly
not free. The cost may include risk to your own life and limb and yes, some
minute, extremely small risk to innocent third parties which society
accepts as the price required so that people can actually do anything.
Just because you now have an oxygen system and have "got religion" doesn't
mean everyone should necessarily do the same. I'm not worried about the mid
air collision risk with some pilot in a club glider who might sneak up to
11000 feet on a good day to get his Gold height. The risk is very, very low
and given that I have oxygen and have had since 1973 I'll just lookout and
otherwise take my chances just like I do below 10000 feet and particularly
near the airport where the collision risk is orders of magnitude higher.
I'm far more worried about people with nasty authoritarian tendencies
infesting gliding, whose logical faculties, even at sea level, are so poor
as to cause them to post such drivel to this group.
