Does anyone know to what altitude the cabin of commercial jets are pressurized when at normal cruising levels ? I did hear once (in the B-727 era) that it was somewhere around 6,000 to 8,000 feet.

Usually 8,000'.

(I have an altimeter built into my watch -- it's actually a barometer
which predicts the weather for the next 12 hours, but if you push a
few buttons you get an altimeter in feet or meters instead. It
usually sits between 7750 and 8250 feet on cruises between Adelaide,
Melbourne and Sydney)
