I'll throw my comments in now.

I have an expensive pair of polarising glasses which I have typically work
driving, on the beach, sailing, skiing, etc and an even more expensive pair
of Serengeti's which I wear flying - this are similar in style to the RayBan
aviators, with a reddish tint and photochromatic - the tint is darkest at
the top than the bottom.

I have now worn both flying - I will NEVER wear polarised lenses again in
the air !! Other aircraft appeared and disappeared as I was looking at them
as they moved across the canopy. Also, some LCD instruments have a polarised
face which is crossed to the glasses - so nothing is readable.

As for the Serengeti glasses, I wouldn't use anything else - growing wisps
stand out, other gliders are easy to spot at a distance, and being
photochromatic, they help when under cloud by letting more light in.

As for looking "cool", even the coolest glasses won't help with the clothes
and especially hats we wear !!

This will simplify the sunglasses issue a tiny bit. "Don't get these!" I
wasn't looking for sunglasses when I tripped across this page.

Still trying to work out if there's any "cool" about them. To me they're
fugly but maybe I'm too old to know.
