Hi I just thought I'd give you my impressions of the four days I was able to spend at the performance week which ends today.
Interestingly, participants were drawn only from Caboolture and Darling Downs clubs - not sure why this was so. We were very lucky to have two national champions (Shane McCaffrey and Bruce Taylor) providing the coaching in two Duo Disci (JSR from DDSC and KC from Kingaroy). Each day started off with a disection of the previous day covering what had worked, what hadn't and a discussion of particular issues. This was followed by talk from Bruce (with additions by Shane) covering performance flying theory. Topics covered ranged from thermal structure through to speeds to fly and all stops between. A task was then set and aircraft assigned. Generally, each Duo lead one or two other gliders round the task - and of course everyone had at least one flight with either Shane or Bruce. What did I learn? Well, maybe most importantly, I learned that I wasn't really doing anything terribly wrong, but equally so I was not necessarily doing the right thing the right way at the right time! Both in my time with Bruce in the Duo and following in Alice, I discovered the value of really using the energy lines' including making quite significant diversions to even small wisps of cloud. The final thing I learned is not a gliding technique - or not a technique limited to gliding: relax! I try too hard and criticise myself when things don't go the way I expect (and it appears I am far from alone in this). By relaxing, I discovered I could sense more of what was going on around me and then make use of it. A very interesting and worthwhile four days - and one I would recommend to anyone who has gone beyond the beginning of XC flying. Thanks Bruce & Shane - and also to Lisa for organising this. -- Robert Hart [EMAIL PROTECTED] +61 (0)438 385 533 Brisbane, Australia http://www.hart.wattle.id.au _______________________________________________ Aus-soaring mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] To check or change subscription details, visit: http://lists.internode.on.net/mailman/listinfo/aus-soaring
