Years ago when I was a kid (like, many years ago...) I used to avidly read
an Australian aviation magazine whose name escapes me now. I think it was a
monthly publication. This was back in the days when a DC6 was a big deal.

There was always a page on aeromodelling (which I was doing then) and on
gliding and I still remember reading about Fred Hoinville and the Flying
Plank, and stories about League 1 and League 2 Nationals and about thermals.
In those years my dream was to be an ANA captain on those DC6s but the
subsequent discovery that I had a red-green colour problem put paid to that.

Although I never seriously considered gliding when I was a kid, I had a
basic awareness. Back in December 1965 I was a wet-behind-the-ears assistant
works engineer posted by the DMR (RTA these days) out to Wentworth, and the
works engineer (Bob Gowing) greeted me with "what are you doing on the
weekend". I was all primed up to turn up at the Sunraysia Gliding Club on
Saturday and I can still vividly remember my first flight in a short wing
Kookaburra with Dick Curry.

I'm still gliding, as is my eldest son Jason, and his two sons have also
been up. So that regular monthly page all those years ago is still paying
off as far as the gliding movement goes.

I am constantly seriously dissapointed that there is not someone wriiting a
full time gliding column in ALL the Australian GA magazines and especially
the growing Sport Aviation magazine market.

Agreed. I'd always been keen on flying, but back in 1991 I'd never really
heard of gliding, so I started GA training. My assumption was that
flying=GA. Fortunately, I've since learnt that this is incorrect, and found

out how wonderful gliding is as recreational (and cheaper!) flying. I wonder
how many other potential glider pilots are in the same situation? Perhaps
the place to advertise gliding is in the GA magazines?
