I am a current regular pooch driver & have been
instructing in & spinning it for about 4 years.
Chris's decision to refuse to spin a Puchacz seems to
be based on 2 seperate things: 1. the spin accident
history of the aircraft - the basis of which has been
rather well counter-argued by Mark & others; and his
(understandable) emotional response to a near-fatal
incident which appears to have been the result of a
poor decision by the checking instructor. Who reverses
spins anyway? Especially below 3000 feet. The altitude
lost during a flick reversal must be significant.
What's more, who knows the centrifugal/aerodynamic
forces that are contributing to the delayed recovery?
Do they even perform this manouvre during
certification testing? Maybe that's why I've never
seen the exercise in any syllabus, nor have I ever
done it .. why would I? And yet I have safely
performed hundreds of normal spins (only 1 turn
ideally)in the Blanik/IS28/Puchacz without incident.
Any attempt to reverse a spin is unecessary & any
training value (is there any?) is far outweighed by
the increased risk - shades of the descent on tow
exercise.

My conclusion: don't blame the aircraft without also
considering the actions of the pilot.
