For
anyone contemplating the purchase of such a unit, just be aware there are some
issues with the SmartSt program hogging the Serial port and once you overcome
this, the unit works fine with SeeYou and other software. The easiest way to
deal with the problem is to delete the SmartSt program but there are other
ways.

Subject: [Aus-soaring] GPS
As an interest item I thought some of you might like to know how I got a GPS as a tax deductable item.
I purchased a Navman PiN from Dick Smith Electronics, its sold as a PDA with a road-map GPS system on board. With the help of others to install the software (Dave Olsen), I am able to run SeeYou Mobile on it, and its working very well. The screen is very clear and the hood I've made for it makes it highly visible in all light conditions. Power supply is no problem as the unit comes with a cigarette lighter power cable.
More than 90% of the unit's use is as a work tool using the windows software already on board so I can legitimately claim that proportion as deductable.
For flying purposes it does need an external power supply to run for the time needed .
The PiN retails at DSE for $885 already $100 less than I paid for it, grrr grrr.
and no I don't work for DSE.
