I've found one of the things that makes a good tow vehicle is a stiff, well
located rear axle on the car. The local products aren't that great in this
regard(Falcon, Commodore) with the Falcon being worse in my experience.
My 1981 Mazda 626 was better than my HR Holden, my Honda Accord is better
than my Commodore was for towing. Lots of distance between the rear wheels
and tow hitch isn't good either.
I checked out a VW Golf at the last Brisbane Motor Show (never again, if
crass commercialism is your scene go! I only went because I won two tickets
from Honda in an online competition) 1700Kg tow capability. Obviously
someone in the VW design department is a glider pilot.
Lightweight trailers tow well. No feasible trailer is going to take being T
boned by a semi so you may as well make it light and stiff. Tony Tabart's
trailers were very good in this regard. Most trailers are overbuilt and far
too heavy. Yes, we have killed other innocent road users with bad unstable
trailers. Not good.
