I get the burgler alarm blue strobes and replace the ele cap 100uf 400v and
this makes a slower brighter strobe. - written up in old RAAus magazine It
is great at the end of the day when the Toll Metro goes through at 5pm each
day. A better way to keep separation is xponder and Brisbane approach keep
us apart no worries.
I put the strobe in a clear case. I will get the article added to my web
site but it will be a few days.

Subject: RE: [Aus-soaring] superbright LEDs-power supplies
John is correct, I have made a switcher for my nav lights which have a 3
watt luxion star LED and reflector, and are marginally dimmer than the 20
watt incandescent they replaced, current drain dropped from 1.5 amps to
200ma, and the heat from burn your fingers to ambient warm.
Cheers
Nigel
Since when did LED's need AC inverters?
LEDs are best driven with constant current. The most efficient way (lowest
battery drain) to do this is to use a switching regulator. there are several
ICs specifically intended for this application, which use just a small
inductor (the frequency is quite high) a couple of capacitors and a resistor
or two to give constant current through the string of LEDs over a wide range
of input voltage. John G. _______________________________________________
