Sheesh guys, I feel a bit like the guest passing wind at the dinner table,
but I'm really sure that something is amiss here.

As a sport we cop a fair degree of "ooh, isn't it dangerous", which I
suspect many of us revel a little in because, to be frank, it feels good.
But at the same time we all want to see our sport's membership increase etc
etc.

And yet our national mail list contains stories (I hope someone's just
pulling my leg) of gaffer taped pins & no pins at all; and our latest
national mag boasts advertisements for new gliders showing a high energy
finish how far (<3m?) above the deck?

Surely this type of advert is just plain wrong after the tragic death at UK
Juniors recently; and the pins stories just plain wrong given the way pilot
attitudes are a key to the deaths we continue to see in Australia.

On the other hand I was impressed with the cool, rational & I bet effective
way HGFA stepped in to address some HG pilots leaving a carabiner unclipped
at coastal sites in the same SA mag.

I'm not a police-state kind of guy, but I'd almost think it was in the GFA's
interests to take some kind of action to prevent these practices and/or to
reduce their gung-ho profile in the sport.

I had a nasty little outlanding incident myself a short while back, and I'm
busily recalibrating my own sense of what's safe versus too risky; newcomers
to the sport seeing this kind of stuff are surely getting the wrong message.

Hope to see you guys #alive# at the next comps.

Our Cirrus flies OK with no pin at all.
You just have to be careful with the gap tape!!

IIRC there is only one loose pin on a Discus B. The MAIN pin.

Wonder who signed the second signature on the MR after rigging?
