Hi
The Pilatus B4 at our club has a split hub steel wheel (bearings all
mounted into one side) with a 200x50 tyre size. A couple of years ago I
looked at replacing it as I was a worried about the bearings. I found
that I could not dismantle the bearing or remove them. All other 200x50
hubs that I looked at were the wrong width. The Pilatus hub is narrower
than all that I found so an easy replacement was not available. I
resorted to a good soaking in solvent to clean the bearings and copious
amounts of oil flushed through them. I was eventually fairly happy with
the result and it has worked well since. I too have recently fitted TOST
200x50 tyres onto non split hubs (SZD gliders)and found them not very
flexible to install.

Subject: Re: [Aus-soaring] Pilatus tailwheel

Hi John,

The PIK has the same type of wheel. Installing a new (6-ply Tost) tyre
just needs strong fingers, lubrication (glycerine is good) and a lot of
perseverance. Don't know of a split hub arrangement.
