Folks,

If you read the Airsrvices-Dotars advisory carefully. There are few cases of
"PILOTS MUST" mentioned. Therefore the Advisory is a "you may" make a call
this way.
Gliders are exempt from carrying radio but MUST use it if fitted.
Personally I have always made a 10km inbound on the Ctaf with a downwind
call. The only difference now is that 10km is 10Nm into Ctaf or Ctaf-R
When everyone works this out and is not trying to provide visual separation
with the radio, I think things will settle.
You can always throw the radio at the aircraft that didn't see you.
There is some confusion even within CASA. No surprise here.
CASA do not enforce radio procedure to my knowledge unless there is a clear
safety breach.

Cheers
Mark

I have been told by a CASA employee that they are going to go out to
airfields and watch the traffic with a hand held radio. Presumably they can
225 you.

However, how can they tell on the ground at Caboolture whether there are
transmissions on 118.8 from ground traffic on the other two very busy
airfields (Redcliffe and Caloundra) on the same frequency stopping you from
making your call? And if you are on 126.7, they have not got a hope of
knowing unless they have an a/c in the air at the same time.

I am very much against these extra calls because especially student pilots
will not be effectively looking out while they are waiting for a space to
get the calls in! If pilots do not have a boom mike and PTT they are in
even more strife!

Nationally RAPAC reps have protested long and loud to no avail.
