If people want to have annual medicals as they advance in age or for any other reason, I think that makes sense but it’s entirely up to the individual. I wouldn’t like to see this become a mandatory requirement for all glider pilots because it will increase the cost and regulatory burden on the younger pilots who currently don’t need a medical exam.

Just to clarify my point below, I should have said that I haven’t paid to see a doctor in Australia for many years. I had the luxury of free RAAF annual aircrew medicals for 20 years with RAAF doctors who were DAMEs and also signed up my Class 1 CASA medicals. Since retiring from the RAAF I have been overseas so I can quote the cost of US FAA Class 2 medical (US$80) but have yet to pay for a Class 2 medical in Australia – hence my guess at the cost.

Cheers,

Patrick

(Somebody arguing vociferously against medicals but with nothing to hide since I have a Class 2 medical)

Does not add up Patrick.
