I haven't looked at the following idea in detail but I would suggest
seeing if you can bolster the back screen lamp on an LCD panel to
increase the light output. e.g. tandem lamps instead of a single unit
to increase outdoor readability. The idea stems from people
dismantling LCD's & putting them on overhead projectors to get a cheap
equivalent of a conventional XGA projector.
This could be a silly idea, but couldn't you just use sunlight? The
colors wouldn't be reproduced accurately but the image will still be
visible.
You would save most of the power used by the LCD.
What I'm thinking about is a tube or some other device to direct
sunlight to the back of the lcd panel. The panel itself would be
removed from the enclosure of course.
