I applied for an ASIC in May 05 (at least at the time I thought that was what I applied for) and received an AVID dated 09 Oct 05. I then applied for an ASIC and expect to get it some time in the next several months. Total processing time about one year!
Interesting access requirements to various "security controlled" airports that we have visited over the last week on a trip from Canberra to Kalumburu (to see the Kimberley in the wet season). Alice Springs is the only "security controlled" airfield we encountered that is actually fully functioning. After leaving the tarmac area at Alice we had to ring a mobile number (Aust Fed Police) and wait a short while to be let back in. My AVID card was required and full details were recorded on a pro forma before we could re-enter. Not sure what would have happened if I didn't have the AVID. Perhaps the photo licence would have been good enough. None of the other "security controlled" airfields we have flown through are anywhere near full operation. Worst instance is one fairly large regional airport which has security fencing and the code numbers on the access gated have been removed and replaced with a mobile number. After ringing that and expecting to have to wait to gain entry, I was somewhat surprised to be given the code number over the phone without even having to state my name or the aircraft rego. At other supposedly "security controlled" airfields you can just come and go with no apparent restrictions at all. Obviously still a long way to go with this whole security process.
