I only learnt of Ian's passing this evening, after his funeral had already been conducted. We had many wonderful exchanges on e-mail over the years, especially when I was membership secretary at Southern Cross.

One of them concerned the sale of Camden Airport back in November 2003. I'm sure Ian wouldn't mind me sharing it with the list, since it explains the kind of person he was.

You might think that its a bit stupid for and old fellow (nearly 80) to be still concerned, but gliding has been a major part of my life. I first started to glide with the ATC in England back in 1941, and apart from my time (1942 to 1947) in the RAF (flying Lancs until 1945) I only stopped gliding, tugging and instructing, when my annual medical gave me problems in 2001. This makes it a long time involvement. For 20+ years of this I was very active with the SCGC and I still feel myself part of the club. Work made me move to Canberra in 1977 and although this did not make me stop gliding, it was never the same again for me.

end quote

Ian used to e-mail me in advance of his visits to Camden (once or twice a year) to find out who was flying that day, and to let people know he was in town and more than happy to have a chat about the good old days of gliding with the more senior members of the club.

I hope I'm still around and healthy enough to be flying in well into my late 70s like Ian.

Regards

Jason Armistead
