Old winches are great but they really are behind the times.
So much development has occurred with automobiles over the last 30 years
however many clubs are stuck with old winches that have failed to take
into account at least the following new developments:
POWER
-Modern 6 cyls have similar power to many of the smaller and medium sized
old V8's
AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS
-30 years ago this was a luxury feature, now it is standard
-Automatics can cope efficiently with a much wider range of wind
conditions
RELIABILITY
-Electronic ignition, long lasting plugs etc make a modern car so much
more reliable.
-Modern cooling systems are so much more effective.
-Batteries and power charging systems are more reliable.
COMFORT
-Generally the seating is much more comfortable.
-Airconditioning and heating
FUEL
-The old 'super' fuel is getting phased out
AFFORDABILITY
-So many more people arrive at a gliding site by themselves in a modern
reliable and well maintained vehicle than people did in the past.
AUTO CLUBS
-Many modern cars are covered by roadside assistance at free variable
cost while at the gliding site.
What is the alternative ????
Continue to spend lots of time and money building new winches trying to
match the R & D that General motors offers us effectively for free.
