Short update on flarm in Australia Mike, Flarm ( or Ozflarm) is being used in several G.A aircraft using the external antenna we had designed, the c150 at Boonah was the first to trial this and it works well. 2 ozflarms are currently being trialled in commuter aircraft in New Zealand and 40 were recently trialed at Omarama at their nationals and subsequently sold to all the pilots. The commuter aircraft trialing the system operate into those areas as well so the data from this will be interesting. Flarm and ourselves are working on a reliable system for G.A that will offer a 5nm range. A combined Flarm/ADS-B system will be demonstrated soon to airservices for future developments to aid ADS-B as it is now recognized that a large number of gliders are fitted with Flarm.
We also have a Super Kingair being fitted which frequents glider areas - will be good to see how this goes. A trial which started 2 weeks ago involving two ultralights fitted with Ozflarms has begun and so far the results are impressive, again using external 4 db antennas and flying in and around high density glider traffic it has amazed the guys at what they do not see in a circuit. Outside G.A we have 2 units for loan/trial being prepared to go into trains for testing - interesting to see what happens here. WE have also developed a high gain antenna for canopies which is basically a clear film with the antenna imprinted on to it, like the demister in a car. It offers both vertical and horizontal polarization which helps resolve our loss of signals when thermalling - will be available soon. He is worth a talk............Ian M Flarm range is probably too short to be much use in the higher performance GA and commuter airline aircraft. I understand there are airframe shielding issues even in Cessna's etc as well as carbon fibre aircraft.. It would be interesting to see if the current Flarm can get out of a commuter airliner windscreen as I believe they are electrically heated.
