Hi Dave,
Firstly I dont think that SAGA can be accused of providing
nothing for the fees they charge.
Secondly, I wouldnt imagine too many people would have an
issue with paying $2 a year for access to the weather data?
I wouldn't. And I wouldn't waste any more time than I've
spent on this email trying to save $2 a year either.
Thirdly, the issue of FLARM has nothing to do with the
weather data that I can see.
In any case, FLARM was manadated by SAGA at all SAGA comps
and coaching events following an 18 month review by the GFA,
trials at Gawler and Kingaroy, extensive surveying of the
competing pilots - which resulted in an overwhelming
positive response.
During this period, a near miss at a Club Class and a mid
air at the subseuqnet Club Class, where FLARM was not
mandated, suggest to me the deciision making process was not
fast enough in any case.
Meanwile at the SAGA State Comps this year (no FLARM), Cath
and I almost had a mid air, so I attended the next SAGA
meeting rather vocal on the matter.
The GFA Sports Committee had already mandated FLARM at
Nationals, and the same argument applies to State Comps and
Coaching events.
It was 100% endorsed by all the SAGA club reps attending.
So I don't think it is fair to say it was a unilateral
decision on the part of SAGA.
I can't think of any argument against this being an
excellent example of a very positive safety outcome for a
relatively small investment (1/3 the price of a parachute,
which is already mandated and is only of use after impact)
cheers
