Stuart - I should have said company flying schools with their training aircraft
in similar colours and often only one different letter in the rego. - I was
not meaning the big stuff - and I can see the point of having the controller
seeing the rego as it is normal to taxi at an airport with the xponder off so
as not to trigger the collision warning on big stuff coming in. There are a
number of motorgliders operating in and out of C and D airports + GAAP + Camden
etc and it would be nice to know gliders are not responsible for ground
confusion of registrations and at worst a ground collision. I myself regularly
fly into C and GAAP Airports and and only have small letters for rego - Nothing
has been said but I usually use the word motorglider and this helps prevent
confusion.

I am not sure all motorglider pilots flying around country are perfect on
proceedures but they must know holding points at airports they fly into thus
the importance of correct rego identification.

I think Mike C covered it well for gliding but I do not mind complying with a
reasonable requirement at repainting time even though we would seem to be
exempt. And Yes I did know about the exemption of the G and recently do the
rego on a new motorglider with just the last 2 letters and fortunately made
them 30cm high

I should have directed my original comment to motorgliders and not upset Ian

  Patch,

In your world is may not seem significant - in my professional

Stuart, I'm not having a go at you, this is just a general observation so
please don't take offence.

A lot, but who cares. I don't. Unless being used in comps or flying out of a
controlled aerodrome.

    Ian,

Aircraft in company colours are usually operating using Flight
Number these days;

that kinda blows a hole in that argument J

Gliders with registrations starting with G are also exempt from displaying
the G, how many

gliders out there with registrations with other than G are not displaying
their registration

    in full?

I gather CASA have brought out a directive that when aircraft are repainted
that the side rego letters on fin (or side of fuse) must be 30cm high (was 10cm
high) Warbirds are exempt!!! Think it would be a good idea that touring
motorgliders consider this size letters in the future otherwise CASA might
realise they forgot us and start on us again re regos. They will never inforce
the carriage of VH on gliders I am sure - Kiwiland GA do not have to carry ZK
which is fair enough for such an island country

I gather it is brought about by controllers not being able to read regos on
similar aircraft (often aircraft in company colours and similar regos) and
giving the clearance to the wrong aircraft and a possible ground collision

Just a thought for those refinishing
