I have to agree with Derek, I found XC-Soar difficult to set up, and in its
latest version I could not even work out how to load it up.

Probably works fine for those with a masters degree in 1 & 0s and we need
people like that - but for the average guy or gal we just want something
that works with the minimum of fuss, otherwise it would be like having to
gain a degree in engineering before you could to drive a car.

I now use SeeYou, it may have cost me money but it saved me a lot of
frustration.

Hi all,

I have to disagree with Derek re XC Soar setup- I have set it up for many
users and it certainly is no more difficult than any other such program.
There was a time when it was more difficult to set up but the process is
now very simple.

Download and install program, only a few mouse clicks, copy
Airspace/terrain/waypoints and topology files to My Documents/XCsoarDATA,
then simply select files in the first setup window in XC Soar. Even this
can be simplified now by using the new .XCM map mfiles in place of most of
those above.

There is even an online map file generator which will make all the
neccesary terrain and topology maps, starting from either your waypoint
file or from lat/long coordinates, again a very simple process.

I am currently helping a number of pilots with setups and find most get
used to it quite quickly, as long as they know how to use a PDA in the
first place, a process taking a couple of hours.

There is an active mailing list which quickly provides help to users with
isuues, with the developers available if we ordinary users cant solve a
problem. The developers even include some modifications suggested by
users. New versions are available frequently(recently weekly!). Try that
with Winpilot!

The whole install and setup process takes less than 5 minutes.

RE the post on glider instruments, I have to agree that they are primitive
to say the least. Whilst accuracy and quality of commercial products is
very good, they are as Emillis said very Retro, with the exception of the
Altair
computer display. But thats gliding, we seem stuck with 20 year old methods
that dont work at all levels of our sport.

While I am at it I have to send a big thanks to John Wharrington, who does
a great job with XC Soar, though there seems to be a lot more changes
during winter(I guess he's "Gone flying" in summer!

All you XCsoar users out there, make sure to buy Johnny some drinks if you
catch up with him, he does a great job with XCS, for no reward!!!!

regards

Dave
