With Dennis McCaffrey's funeral tomorrow I can't help myself and tell a few
stories about the dead. First came accross him in late 60s at Narromine
Nationals where they wer flying K7 and we were in Bergfalke 3 - they won!!
Then when Shane was a kid he had him in the hopper of the 150 Pawnee pouring
seed or whatever as he did the runs over the paddocks. Another was the time he
was going to a queensalnd comps in Pawnee and saw a glider trailer so deceided
a beatup was in order except he forgot the tow rope and hit a power line and
set fire to paddock - CASA were then chasing the AG pilot who set fire to the
paddock. Dennis got off that one. Another time at the bar Dennis was trying to
get Giles Taylor give him a aviation medical so he could fly the Pawnee again.
Giles did not budge. I think it was a few days later that Stowe packed him off
to hospital at 3am as Dennis had a heart attack. Stowe was thoughtful enough
not to wake up Giles the doctor who was in the caravan next door - Stowe abley
handeled the situation with a certain pill under his tongue. I guess Dennis was
getting old and Giles needed a good nights sleep
I would say there is another 50 such stories about Dennis who must go down as
the most colourful character Queensland Gliding has ever had if not Australia
My simpathy goes to Shane, Barry and the rest of the family

Dear Jo and Richard,
This is very sad news indeed. Dennis always seemed to me to just keep on
going and going. His remarkable efforts with all of gliding and in particular
DDSC will always be remembered. His approach to nearly everything was the can
do method and his legacy will be the future.
Please pass my condolences onto Shane when you see him for me and when next
soaring spare a thought for Dennis.
Best wishes
Ian Patching.

We regret to have to forward on the sad news that our club patron, Dennis
