Diesel fuel has a significantly higher specific gravity than petrol 
so when making volume comparisons it looks good. Less so on mass grounds.

As for emissions, I believe you can't sell a diesel car in California 
right now because of emissions but we're talking NOx, CO and unburned 
hydrocabons and other nasties, not CO2 which is an essential 
atmospheric trace gas for life.
