Try Andrew at: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Andrew is one of the more adventurous and progressive amateur radio
operators who have been working APRS (Automatic Position Reporting
System) over the past several years. I have been using APRS for
probably about 5 years in a couple of my vehicles. Google APRS to get
the full story.

The APRS concept is promising for gliding, and I have been planning to
try it out for years but the opportunity has not arisen due to other
pressures. Andrew has done some basic work in this area.

One of the things which might limit the development of APRS for gliding
is the lack of a suitable data frequency, and the equipment to transmit
on such a frequency. Amateurs have plenty of resources in this area
and a very well developed network of repeater stations and Igates which
are linked to the internet making it possible to track any APRS station
in the world on maps and including an altitude readout.

Gliding has none of these facilities either in legislation or
infrastructure. There are a couple of UHF CB channels which are
dedicated to data transmission (in theory) but there are challenges in
setting up such a system - APRS is possibly outside of the intended
guidlines for these channels. I can't be sure on this but I would think
that an APRS system would not be what the ACMA had in mind when they set
up these regulations.

Andrew will be the bloke to contact about this.

Regards,
Terry
