Hi All,

Some older news, we have been away so hence the delay but the news is that
Flarm have had their unit approved for use as an IGC logger for badge
flights only up to diamond. This requires the unit to be returned for
updating and seal and also checking functionality to make sure it is working
fine. We are now seeking the same approval for the OzFlarm and MiniOz units
which will enable many to have an approved logger for a small upgrade fee,
this also allows clubs who already have flarm but no logger to have all
their fleet potentially IGC approved. Following is the official press
release:

Below the official GFAC "press release":

I am pleased to announce that after appropriate test and evaluation,
an IGC-approval has been issued for the flight recording aspects of an
upgraded version of the Flarm equipment made by Flarm Technology GmbH
of Zurich, Switzerland. This Flarm model is called the Flarm-IGC
Version 1.0. It is understood that existing Flarm equipment can be
modified to this standard, but that is a commercial matter between
owners and the Flarm company.

The IGC-approval is dated 10 March 2008 and the full document will
appear on the IGC GNSS web site shortly. It only applies to the
flight recording aspects of the equipment, other functions such as
the Flarm traffic alert function are not the responsibility of FAI or
IGC and are a matter for owners and other users.

This IGC-approval only refers to Flarm units from the above company
and that conform to the terms of the approval document. For Flarm
units produced under license by other companies or fitted as modules
in equipment from other companies, separate IGC-approval documents
apply where such units have been tested and confirmed to be to the IGC
standard. Examples are the LXN Colibri 4F and LX7007F that have an
embedded Flarm module and already have IGC-approval.

Other Flarm equipment such as OzFlarm and LXN Red Box Flarm are not
covered by this approval but after appropriate testing may be covered
in the future if the manufacturers so desire.

You are encouraged to read the full terms of the IGC-approval for
Flarm-IGC V1.0 when the document is posted on the IGC GNSS web site.

Version 4 update.

Just a reminder that your OzFlarm and MiniOz will stop working soon if you
have not updated to the version 4 upgrade which is available from the flarm
website. When doing this update you will notice your flarm IGC details will
be changed, namely the last 2 lines - you will need to re enter these. Some
have had issues with no GPS lock, if this happens go into flarmtool and set
the automatic setting to Australia 921mhz - this seems to fix it. The auto
setting is a new feature, its like roaming on your mobile, it auto detects
the country you are in and sets the appropriate RF frequency. If you are not
traveling overseas with your flarm set the manual option anyway.

Could you pass this email on to your clubs email lists so all can view.

Cheers

Nigel
