Wayne,
saying a parcel of air rises because it is warm OR rises because the cooler 
air around it forces it up is describing the same thing, except from 
different view points.

Your "rule"
      "A parcel of air cannot rise away from the earth by itself as it has a 
mass, this mass is acted apon by gravity"
      is trivially true, but not a useful statement.

      A parcel of air cannot _exist_ _by itself_

Stephen, you are right, the result is exactly the same.
Its interesting that glider pilots are one of the few groups who can grasp this.
Most think that because they see the result and know the trigger, they 
understand the concept.
Actually its in reverse to what most people think, although the thermal is 
triggered by something, the work is produced by gravity.
